If you are traveling on a tight budget, you also can take public transportation or tourist bus . Please keep in mind that this will be cheaper, but a longer and adventures journey to reach Bukit Lawang. Note: First Local bus from Pinang Baris station leaves at 6.30 am, the last one leaves at 20.00 pm. They will pick up and drop off local people during the way, the buses can be very crowded.
WARNING: Overcharging for a local transport from Medan to Bukit Lawang is almost universal. Street hawkers at the bus stop will tell you to pay before boarding, the cost they ask is Rp. 50,000 up till Rp. 300,000. The fact is, you pay when you arrive in Bukit Lawang and the normal price is Rp. 30.000
